How important are food delivery drivers?

If you think of a parcel or same day delivery driver delivering a shopping package or goods item, this is something most likely associated with the words courier or delivery driver. This however misses out a large part of work that delivery drivers undertake – food. The rise and increase of food delivery has exploded over recent years and there is more demand than ever for delivery drivers to deliver food items. Some even deliver as an extra or side job in addition to their main role. Food delivery is being driven by the modern way of life. As smartphones and on demand technology becomes quicker, targeted and more refined, this has allowed this sub industry of the delivery and courier sector to expand.

What does a food delivery driver do?

A food delivery driver can cover many areas and have many duties. Some might immediately think of those high profile supermarkets who deliver products or the weekly shop to your door. Others may associate food delivery drivers with those who bring that much deserved take-away treat on and Friday or Saturday night.

The role of a food delivery driver isn’t as simple as you often think. Many think it is literally a case of transportation from ‘A’ to ‘B’, but it is rarely that simple. Many food couriers have a role in picking, packing and packaging the items that arrive at your door (whether this is from the supermarket in the weekly shop scenario, or from the restaurant in the take-away scenario.)  A food delivery driver can be handling multiple orders or jobs at the same time, planning the routes for optimum efficiency. This is of course extra important if you are having hot food delivered. No one wants cold fish and chips that have been travelling around town for an hour!

Food delivery drivers also have the reputation of the organisation on the line ultimately, and this is something that is often overlooked. If produce arrives bad or cold, it is the delivery driver who is the initial point of contact for that business, and it is then how they handle that situation and that customer that can be the ‘make or break’ moment for the business.

Why are food delivery drivers important?

As already mentioned above, the role of a food delivery driver is complex – like cogs in a wheel. It is  rarely as basic as you might imagine. Food delivery drivers work hard and long hours to ensure that customers of the business are happy and that their needs and wishes are taken care of. Food delivery drivers have a responsible job of ensuring food items are delivered quickly but safely. Being able to undertake your work fast, whilst still ensuring that all health and safety considerations are met is a skill in itself, and this is another reason why such drivers are so important.
